Tax Associate

Remote | Seasonal with Path to Permanent

The Phillips Group is a modern accounting, tax, and advisory firm serving dentists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals across more than 20 states. We are growing and currently hiring one experienced Tax Associate to join our team.

This is not a high-volume tax shop. Our clients are established, growth-minded healthcare professionals with complex financial profiles. They expect accuracy, responsiveness, and professionalism. We expect the same from our team.

About the Role

This position is posted as seasonal with the goal of identifying a high-performing professional who may transition into a permanent role.

You will primarily prepare individual income tax returns using Intuit Lacerte, respond to tax notices, and collaborate with senior preparers on more complex matters. Depending on your experience and growth goals, the role may expand into business returns and client advisory support.

Core Responsibilities

  • Prepare Form 1040 and related schedules using Lacerte

  • Review client documents and request clarification when needed

  • Research federal and state tax issues

  • Draft responses to IRS and state notices

  • Collaborate with senior team members on complex returns

  • Maintain organized, accurate, and well-documented workpapers

  • Communicate professionally with clients via email and scheduled calls

Growth opportunities may include:

  • Preparation of S-Corporation, C-Corporation, and Partnership returns

  • Client bookkeeping and accounting review

  • Participation in tax planning discussions

  • Direct client meetings

Compensation

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, with premium consideration given to experienced Lacerte users and credentialed professionals.

Range: $30 - $45+ per hour.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years preparing individual income tax returns

  • At least one full tax season using Intuit Lacerte

  • Strong working knowledge of Form 1040 and related schedules

  • Experience responding to IRS or state tax notices

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines during busy season

  • Clear written communication skills

  • Comfort working independently in a fully remote environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • EA or CPA designation

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • Experience with California returns

  • Experience preparing business returns (1120S, 1120, 1065)

  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks
